Vision is probably our most important sense. Being able to see is pretty much the focus of our lives. We rely on good eyesight to perform all our daily tasks, such as getting dressed, eating, driving, taking care of our families, working, and performing errands. Many movements, tasks, and personal interactions rely on vision. Even our sleep schedules are affected by the light we see during the day.

Common Eye Conditions
Here’s how to handle common eye conditions:
- Cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. Early on, a cataract may be treated with glasses or contact lenses. As it progresses, though, surgery is the only remaining option. Cataract surgery is a very common procedure, and complications are rare. The surgery itself takes just 30 minutes and improves the vision of patients about 95% of the time.
- Glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve, and this damage can lead to blindness. Glaucoma tends to be age-related, but can also be caused by diabetes or high ocular pressure. Medication, laser surgery and traditional surgery are the most common treatments.
- Dry eye. Dry eye is a common disease in which the eye under-produces tears or tears leave the eye too quickly. This can lead to red eyes as well as a burning, stinging, or scratchy sensation in the eyes. Women and older people are prone to this condition. Artificial tear eye drops and medications are the most effective treatments, although advances in technology have led to an FDA-approved treatment called TearCare, which is a 15-minute in-office procedure used to treat dry eye due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
- Macular degeneration. Macular degeneration affects cells in the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Central vision is essential for tasks like reading and driving. It comes in two forms: dry and wet. Neither can be cured, although there are some treatments for wet macular degeneration. Laser therapy and certain drugs can be helpful.
Eye Care Tips
There are things doctors say you can do every day to maintain good eye health. They include the following:
- Practice the 20-20-20 rule. To reduce digital eye strain, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes when using screens.
- Wear sunglasses year-round. Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays even on cloudy days. Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
- Maintain a healthy diet. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, zinc, and lutein. These nutrients help protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Include leafy greens, fish, and nuts in your diet.
- Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water can help prevent dry eyes and maintain good tear production.
- Don’t skip regular eye exams. Even if you don’t have vision problems, regular check-ups can help detect issues like glaucoma or diabetes-related eye conditions early.
- Adjust your workspace. Position your screen about 25 inches (an arm’s length) away and slightly below eye level. This reduces strain and improves comfort.
- Blink more often. When staring at screens, people tend to blink less. Make a conscious effort to blink regularly to keep your eyes moist.
- Use the right lighting. Avoid bright overhead lights or direct sunlight while using screens. Instead, use adjustable desk lamps to reduce glare.
- Consider blue light filters. Blue light from screens may cause eye strain and disrupt sleep. Use screen protectors or software filters that block blue light.
- Wear protective eyewear. Whether you’re playing sports, working in the garden, or handling tools, wear safety glasses to prevent injuries.
- Be cautious with eye makeup. Replace mascara and eyeliner at least every six months to avoid eye infections. Remove makeup thoroughly before bed.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes. It can irritate your eyes, spread bacteria, and potentially cause damage, especially if you have something in your eye.
